Dhirubhai Ambani — A Lesson in Succession Planning

Shri Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries,
died in July 2002 without a will.

After his death, his sons Mukesh and Anil Ambani
initially took on leadership roles in the family business,
but disagreements over control and ownership
eventually became a major public dispute.

Differences between Mukesh and Anil over control of the businesses
became increasingly public.

2005 — The empire is divided
Their mother, Kokilaben Ambani, helped broker a settlement.
The businesses were divided between the brothers,
with Mukesh taking the petrochemicals-focused
Reliance Industries businesses
and Anil receiving businesses including
telecom and financial services.

The lesson

A successful business can be built over a lifetime — but without a clear succession plan, deciding what happens next can become a family battle. 

A will may not solve every business-governance issue, but clear estate and succession planning can reduce uncertainty about a person's wishes and help families deal with assets and responsibilities more systematically.
