Priyamvada Birla — A Will That Sparked a Legal Battle 

Priyamvada Devi Birla, a prominent industrialist and promoter of the M.P. Birla Group, died on 3 July 2004. She and her husband Madhav Prasad Birla had no children. After her death, a Will dated 18 April 1999 became the centre of a major dispute over the Birla family's assets and business interests.

What happened?

A Will was produced
The disputed 1999 Will reportedly left her properties, including the estate connected with her husband, to R.S. Lodha and subsequently his son.

The Birla family challenged it
Several members of the Birla family opposed the Will and questioned its validity, leading to probate proceedings before the Calcutta High Court.

The dispute continued for years
The question of whether the Will should be accepted and given legal effect resulted in prolonged testamentary litigation. The Supreme Court record also notes disputes concerning earlier Wills and the estate.

The lesson 

A Will is meant to make your wishes clear—not become another question your family has to fight over. 

A properly prepared Will should clearly identify the assets, beneficiaries and executor, and should be executed in accordance with applicable law. Where a Will is challenged, the court may have to examine its validity and surrounding circumstances.
