Sunjay Kapur, the businessman and former chairman of Sona Comstar, died in June 2025. His death was followed by a high-profile inheritance dispute involving his widow, his children from his previous marriage, and his mother. The reported value of his estate has been put at around ₹30,000 crore, although the valuation itself has been disputed.
What happened?
June 2025 — Sunjay Kapur dies
Kapur died suddenly while playing polo in the UK, leaving behind substantial business and personal assets.
March 2025 — A purported Will
A Will dated March 21, 2025, was later produced. According to court reporting, it purportedly left Sunjay Kapur's personal estate to his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, while excluding his children from his earlier marriage and his mother.
September 2025 — The dispute reaches court
His children, Samaira and Kiaan, approached the Delhi High Court seeking a share in their father's estate and challenging the validity and circumstances surrounding the purported Will.
2025–2026 — The inheritance battle continues
The dispute has involved competing claims about the Will, the estate's assets and their distribution. The matter has continued before the Delhi High Court.
The lesson
A Will is not simply about dividing wealth. It is about making your wishes clear before your family has to make difficult decisions without you.
A Will cannot guarantee that a dispute will never happen. But clear estate planning, properly documented wishes and careful identification of assets and beneficiaries can reduce uncertainty and make your intentions easier to establish.
