You Decide Who Gets What 

Intro

When someone dies without a will, their assets aren't distributed according to what they actually wanted — they're distributed according to inheritance law, which varies depending on religion and family structure. A will is the only way to make sure your own wishes, not a legal formula, decide who receives what. 

Why This Matters

Under intestate succession (no will), the law applies a fixed formula to divide your estate among specific relatives, in a specific order, regardless of your relationships, circumstances, or intentions. It doesn't matter if you were closer to one child than another, if a family member supported you through illness, or if you wanted to leave something to a friend — none of that is accounted for without a will. 

What a Will Changes

With a valid will, you can:

• Choose exactly who inherits each asset

• Leave specific items to specific people (property, jewelry, savings, etc.)

• Include people outside your immediate legal heirs — like a friend, a caregiver, or a distant relative

• Exclude someone, if you have reason to, within the bounds of the law
